Position Overview

The Physical Sciences department at RTRC is seeking an engineer/scientist in the area of high temperature materials.  The candidate will be an integral member of dynamic teams focused on accelerated development of next generation high temperature materials for both aerospace and defense applications. 

Required Qualifications

The candidate should have materials development experience in one or more of the following areas:

(1) Ceramic matrix composites and associated environmental barrier coatings

(2) Protective coatings for high temperature applications and

(3) Refractory metal alloys.  

  • A fundamental understanding of thermo-chemistry for multicomponent systems is required as well as the hands-on ability to synthesize, test and characterize new materials.
  • The candidate must be capable of operating independently in the laboratory while also being comfortable working with others from a variety of backgrounds in a teaming environment. 
  • Excellent communication skills are required for this role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in computational thermochemical code (FactSage) would be beneficial as well as experimental fabrication methods including CVI, ALD, powder processing, slurry formulation, densification and thermal processing. 
  • Understanding and knowledge in material failures at high temperature would be beneficial along with an interest in writing research proposals.

Education and Experience

  • A PhD in Materials Science or related field or a Masters Degree in Material Science or related field and a minimum of 3 years experience
