Staff Software Engineer - Advanced Technology R&D
Our goal is to create technologies that allow Collins to differentiate our products from the competitors’ and create new market opportunities through innovation. We’re presently creating state-of-the-art electronics, including: phased array SATCOM terminals that provide global internet connectivity, multifunction reconfigurable RF front-ends, and modular UAV radios for communication, radar, and electronic warfare.
Job Summary:
Are you ready to be a part of a design race pursuing novel state of the art software defined radio technology? We are looking for an energetic, highly skilled engineer to share in the shaping of our next generation products.
The advanced radio systems (ARS) department is responsible for tasks related to the research and development of advanced radio technologies for military markets.
This exciting position requires a background in software design, including experience with embedded and PC hardware. Successful applicants will collaborate in the development of new chip designs and circuit card assemblies — carrying ideas from concept and planning through design, test, and release. Additionally, this position involves collaboration with program management, our talented multidisciplinary team, and internal/external customers.
Job Responsibilities:
Develop cutting-edge embedded software for control in software defined radios for our military customers (includes updates and clean sheet designs)
Create graphical user interfaces (GUI) for a variety of platforms, including Windows, LINUX, and Android.
Develop board support package (BSP) software.
Design custom drivers and integrate third-party drivers to various operating systems (OS) for interfaces like high speed Ethernet, memory, I2C, SPI, and sensors.
Define requirements for new designs and develop requirements specification
Perform digital architectural design-including block diagram, trade off studies and design reviews
Perform detailed design-including SW implementation, design analysis, and design reviews
Push the boundaries by introducing machine learning into embedded software
Support software - firmware integration
Perform software design verification tasks
Participate in project retrospectives and assist in continuous process and workflow improvements
Participate in collaborative efforts to creatively solve problems in innovative ways
Create presentations explaining the approach and relevance to the design
Present technology concepts to customers/subcontractors in support of funding pursuits
Support external funding pursuits through proposal writing and/or customer meetings
Assist in the strategic technical planning including development of technology roadmaps and project concepts in alignment with business unit goals
Lead project teams (3-5 individuals)
Train and oversee efforts of less experienced designers
Basic Qualifications:
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in the appropriate discipline and 7 years of relevant experience or an Advanced degree in the appropriate discipline and 5 years of relevant experience. In the absence of a degree, 11 years of relevant experience is required.
Must be a U.S. Citizen
Must have or be capable of obtaining a US Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation/reinstatement and must meet eligibility requirements
Key Competencies:
Demonstrated ability to design, compile, and verify software
Ability to comment code and create design documentation
Ability to create software to interface with synchronous and asynchronous state machines
Familiarity with using software tools such as C, C++, C#, Qt, MATLAB, Java, Python, or others
Experience with embedded microcontroller and/or microprocessors
Must be able to complete meaningful work in the absence of complete specifications and help create digital architectures for RF system requirements as a work in progress
Experience with test plans
Demonstrated technical knowledge/expertise in multiple technologies
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot problems while integrating components or subassemblies
Demonstrated problem-solving skills and data-driven decision-making
Excellent verbal/written communication and teamwork skills
Experience in identifying, communicating, and mitigating risks
Knowledgeable of industry trends within his/her domain
Demonstrated ability to work in a creative, as well as practical, problem solving environment
Preferred Qualifications:
Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS)
Strong interest in machine learning
Experience in Tensor Flow, Python
Process Control – Requirements capture
Experience in FPGA/SW integration on multiprocessor system-on-chip (MPSoC)
Experience integrating digital components with RF components/assemblies including filters, low-noise amplifiers, mixers, power amplifiers, power regulators/converters, switches, frequency synthesizers
Demonstrated ability to apply digital modulation, coding, and error correction
Bid & proposal resulting in successful capture of funding
Experience with environmental effects testing
Supervision:The Staff Electrical Engineer does not have direct reports, but will direct work activities for supporting technicians, junior engineers, and project support staff. The Staff Electrical Engineer will work collaboratively with component designers and other multi-disciplinary engineers. The Staff Electrical Engineer is led by the Associate Director for RF Systems who is led by the Executive Director for Mission Systems Advanced Technology.
Relation to Other Jobs:The Staff Electrical Engineer will work with a team of other engineers and technicians. The Staff Electrical Engineer must collaborate with internal and external customers, peer engineers, finance, and leadership.
