Inspection Technician

Pratt & Whitney is seeking a highly motivated individual to support research, development and production of ceramic matrix composite (CMC) turbine components. CMCs are an enabling material that increases the temperature capability of jet engine components. Through successful development and application of these materials, P&W will deliver engines that are more fuel efficient, lighter weight and more durable for commercial and military applications.

The inspection technician will be primarily responsible for the development and implementation of test methods and procedures needed to determine the dimensional features of products, validation and production inspections of all products produced from manufacturing and assembly processes, proper use, and maintenance of measurement tools and equipment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Program and operate structured light and coordinate measuring machine (CMM) inspection systems
  • Interpret blueprints, work orders, engineering plans, specifications, reference planes, designs sketches and geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T) for operation, material, and dimensional requirements
  • Develops and uses measurement methods and equipment to determine the dimension features of products conform to the design features
  • Perform inspection machine setups and make adjustments as required
  • Analyze measurement data to disposition parts, assess trends and take appropriate actions
  • Works within quality and safety standards
  • Program machine loading and unloading automation as applicable
  • Manually inspect parts with manual measurement tools and methods as required
  • Develop measurement programs for use by quality inspectors and production personnel
  • Optimize inspection methods to expedite inspections and manage equipment capacity
  • Train colleagues/technicians/inspectors on CMM and structured light systems and operations for specific parts
  • Compile and analyze measurement data and statistics to assess measurement methods and process capability
  • Perform Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (GRR) studies to evaluate measurement methods
  • Identify and Report Non-conformances of product or processes
  • Provide support for Root Cause and Corrective Action investigations
  • Support general quality activities including receiving inspections, lot traceability and part specific quality certifications
  • Support other quality functions including non-destructive inspections, continuous improvement etc.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma with 3+ years of metrology or related experience
  • Must be a US Citizen or green card holder

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two year technical degree
  • Certificate in manufacturing, quality control or manufacturing
  • Experience in product development, manufacturing or inspection within an AS9100 certified aerospace company
  • Ability to work from 3D-CAD-models, blueprints, sketches and detailed instruction
  • Read and interpret technical drawings and specifications including ISO/ASME GD&T.
  • Utilize Trigonometry, Geometry, Statistics and basic math problem-solving skills.
  • Basic understanding of typical quality tools including 8d, statistical process control, FMEA and control plans.
  • Vision and/or Coordinate Measurement Machine certificate (Measure X, MeasureMind, Calypso), or relevant experience. ASQ certification as CQT, or CQI
